Institutional Funeral in Honour of Her Royal Highness Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbón y Borbón

His Royal Highness The Crown Prince Davit of Georgia attended the institutional funeral in honour of Her Royal Highness Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbón y Borbón, late Duchess of Badajoz.

At the personal invitation of His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, Crown Prince Davit joined Their Majesties King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain; Their Majesties King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía; and other descendants and family members of the late Infanta Doña Pilar, sister of King Juan Carlos I and aunt of the present King of Spain. The funeral Mass was held at the Basilica of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial at midday on 29 January.

Mass was celebrated by The Most Reverend Monsignor Juan del Río Martín, Military Archbishop of Spain, and was also attended by representatives of several Royal Houses.

Her Royal Highness Infanta Doña Pilar was the eldest daughter of Infante Don Juan Carlos Teresa Silverio Alfonso de Borbón y Battenberg, Count of Barcelona. She was born on 30 July 1936 in Cannes, France, and died in Madrid on 8 January 2020 after a long battle with cancer.

The late Infanta Doña Pilar married Don Luis Gómez-Acebo y Duque de Estrada, 2nd Viscount of La Torre and Grandee of Spain (23 December 1934–9 March 1991), on 5 May 1967 in Lisbon, Portugal. They had five children.

Infanta Doña Pilar was one of the founders of Asociación Nuevo Futuro in 1968, an international child-support organisation. She served as its president and later as its honorary president. Until her death, she was one of the leading supporters of the Rastrillo Nuevo Futuro event, which provided part of the Association’s funding. The event was also visited by Queens Letizia and Sofía of Spain.

Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbón y Borbón was known for her unforgettable charitable work.
