His Royal Highness Crown Prince Davit of Georgia attended the Portuguese royal wedding of Infanta Maria Francisca de Bragança, Duchess of Coimbra and daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Braganza, and Duarte de Sousa Araújo Martins.
The couple were married during a moving Catholic nuptial Mass at the Royal Basilica of Mafra. The ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Patriarch Emeritus Manuel Clemente and concelebrated by Cardinal Américo Aguiar together with other bishops and priests.
Thousands of family members, friends, and well-wishers attended the joyful event, which took place at the Palace of Mafra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site completed during the eighteenth century.
The wedding was described as the first royal event of its kind in Mafra since Portugal became a republic in 1910. Senior representatives of the Portuguese Republic were also present.
President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was seen leaving the Royal Basilica alongside the Duchess of Braganza. The occasion demonstrated both the dignity of Portugal’s republican institutions in their relationship with the country’s royal family and the dynasty’s respect for the institutions of the Republic.
The event offered a clear illustration of the maturity of Portuguese democracy and an acknowledgement that the country’s republican institutions and royal family each have complementary roles in defending, supporting, and promoting Portugal.
Representatives of numerous reigning and non-reigning royal and imperial families attended in support of the young couple. The occasion also provided an opportunity to renew friendships with guests from Portugal, Jordan, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, Belgium, Georgia, and Albania, as well as with the Prince and Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta.
Guests were treated to a selection of Portuguese meat and fish dishes, wines, cakes, and other traditional specialities.
It was a memorable and joyful day for the young couple and for the family members and friends who gathered to support them on their special occasion.
